RELAP5 SYSTEMS THERMAL-HYDRAULIC TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR RESEARCH REACTOR APPLICATIONS Algiers, Algeria Cohosted - Commissariat à l''Energie Atomique October 3 - 7, 2009 A RELAP5 thermal-hydraulic training workshop will be held in Algiers, Algeria October 3-7, 2009. Commissariat à l''Energie Atomique will cohost the training workshop. The workshop will be taught by Dr. Chris Allison. Dr. Allison has been involved with the development of RELAP5 and RELAP/SCDAP codes for more than 30 years. He is currently the administrator for the SDTP international software development and training program. He also served as a technical consultant for the International Atomic Energy Agency for RELAP5 and Accident Management training for research reactor and nuclear power plant applications. The outline for the training workshop is the following: Day 1 • Introduction • Review of basic theory on RELAP5/3.4 numerical approaches • Review of basic components and models for nodalization (with focus on approach to models specific RR components such as pumps and heat exchangers) • RELAP5/3.4 special user options (with focus on RR applications) • State steady options and controllers • Time step optimization (focus on relevant methods for use in Real Time Simulation) Day 2 • Review of RELAP5 Validation and Research Reactor Applications: • RELAP5 Current and future development activities • Coupling RELAP5 to other analysis packages • 3D Neutron-Kinetics • CFD codes • Containments and structural codes • Introduction to Nuclear Plant Analyzer (NPA) GUIs • Using 3D graphics and NPA GUIs for selected user problems • Using NPA display for sample research reactor problem Day 3 • RELAP Input preparation and related QA/QC procedures • Presentation of kinetics parameters development for RELAP5 (with focus on power distribution) • RELAP5 input assessment and qualification • Introduction of research reactor sample problems • Overview of resolution of specific problems encountered for RR components (example: pump data and exchangers ) • Discussion of common research reactor analysis and licensing issues • Example : RR licensing calculations and sample problems • Example – SAFARI SAFSIM training simulator Day 4-5: practical exercises : 5 groups • Example – Development of Korean Research Reactor input • Group exercises using representative input models (Standard RR input model for international participants and user models for local participants) • Participant input models and code applications to Algeria RR (02) and Test loops (01), and a benchmark (01) • Presentation of participants results • Comparison of participant results and input models and discussions • Concluding Remarks and Closing
Participants will be provided with (a) a copy of RELAP/SCDAPSIM/MOD3.4 to use during the training sessions, (b) a full set of RELAP/MOD3.3 and SCDAP/RELAP5/MOD3.2 reference manuals, (c) supplemental RELAP/SCDAPSIM/MOD3.4 user manuals, (d) a variety of reactor specific training materials and sample problems, and (e) copies of the lectures and training problems on CD.
